About John Ogdon

John Andrew Howard Ogdon was commonly known as John Ogdon who was an English pianist and composer. In composition Ogdon was joined the Manchester New Music Group, which included Birtwistle, Goehr and Maxwell Davies amongst its members. In 1958, Ogdone made his London debut as a soloist, playing the Busoni Piano Concerto at proms. He came to international attention when he won the first prize in Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition jointly with Vladimir Ashkenazy in 1962. He recorded his duo- piano work with his wife. In 1969, he gave his first modern performance of Edward Elgar's Concert Allegro, Op. 46. Ogdon was diagnosed as schizophrenia, so he spent some time in the Maudsley Hospital in London and he was maintained three hours practice in a day on the hospital’s piano. Ogdon was died in August 1989 of pneumonia and brought on by un-diagnosed diabetes.
