Douglas Hurd is a British politician who served the country as former Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs under the government of Margaret Thatcher and John Major. He started his political career in 1966 as member of Conservative Party but before that served in Diplomatic services for 14 years. In 1974, he got elected as Member of Parliament for Mid Oxfordshire till 1983 later joining as Member of Parliament for Witney till 1997. Being as Member of Parliament, he achieved many renowned posts as follows
• Minister of Europe (1979-1983)
• Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1984-1985)
• Home Secretary (1985-1989)
• Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1989-1995)
Serving at above mentioned posts, he led the signing of Anglo-Irish Agreement which helped the government to build up good relations with Northern Ireland in future. He also worked on strengthening relations with U.S and European countries solving issue of international terrorism. He later announced his resignation as foreign Secretary keeping intact his parliamentary seat. In 1997, he served as the House of Lords finally retiring from the position on 9th June, 2016. His children are Nick, Philip, Jessica and Thomas.

Douglas was born on 8th March, 1930 in Marlborough, Wiltshire, UK to Anthony and Stephanie Hurd. He was raised in a political family with both father and grandfather as Members of Parliament. He went to Twyford School moving on for further study at Eton College. He majored in subject of history at Cambridge University followed by joining the Diplomatic service as second lieutenant from 1952 to 1966.
He also served as Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1974.
