About Roger Lapham

Roger Lapham was New York born businessman who landed into family business of ships ownership. He is best known for being the representative of Republican Party serving as 32nd Mayor of San Francisco for single tenure from 1944 to 1948. He began his career as businessman in home steamship company rising up to the post of its president in 1925. He further ran for the elections for the post of mayor leaving National War Labor Board where he was working as representative. He made his best efforts to bring United Nations founding conference to San Francisco during his tenure. In 1945, he faced problems due to wartime workers who settled in city causing declining in standard of living plus downtown traffic. He led a Citizens’ Postwar Planning Commission to solve out the issue ultimately leading to modern development of city. He also went through first recall attempt in city history as issue regarding increasing streetcar fares in 1946. He after completing his tenure joined as chief of post-war Economic Cooperation Administration for China and Greece breathing his last on 16th April, 1966 at the age of 82 in San Francisco.
Achievements
He was appointed as “business” mayor by J. Ward Maillard for waterfront strike in 1936 after Angelo Rossi constituency.
