About Arthur Gould

Arthur Gould was a British rugby player who played both at fullback and centre position for national team Wales from 1885 to 1997. He started his rugby career in age 14 as a junior player of club Newport later making debut as senior for the same at age 18 after getting selected in First XV draft. He played for the club till 1898 also playing for the other notable clubs like London Welsh, Richmond F.C., Southampton Trojans, Middlesex and Hampshire. While being with London Welsh, he was honoured as one of six players in team to play in front of 8,000 and Prince of Wales. In 1885, he was selected for Wales leading the team to win the Home Nations Championship and Triple Crown title in 1893. He was also crowned with captaincy for 18 times in club that remained as record until broken by Leuan Evans in 1994. He was even famous for “Gould affair” that led Wales to withdraw for a year from international rugby. He got retired a year later finally working as a brewery representative until his death on 2nd January 1919 at age 54 due to internal haemorrhage.

Arthur was born on 10th October, 1864 in Newport, United Kingdom as Arthur Joseph “Monkey” Gould to Joseph and Elizabeth. He was raised in his hometown with his five siblings; Bob, Bert, Harry, Gus and Wyatt who were also famous rugby players of that time. Even his father Joseph was an ardent sportsman who played in local cricket team. He was also active in various track and field events as hurdler finishing third in 120-yard hurdles at Amateur Athletic Association games in 1887 and 1893.
